LA CHIUSA IN MONTEVAGO: A WINERY THAT PROMOTES THE RESPECT OF TRADITIONS, THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND A PHILOSOPHY OF HOSPITALITY IN THE TERRE SICANE.
The azienda agricola La Chiusa, family, located in the municipality of Montevago in “La Chiusa” have a few hectares of vineyards and little more than a hectare and a half grown at olive grove. It also cultivates fruit trees and seasonal vegetable varieties.
The farm is adjacent to the ruins of the old village of Man destroyed by the earthquake of 1968. On the property of approximately 10 ha are pre-existing rural Archaeology: an old lime kiln, a mannara, the ruins of a rural House, a pond of 1500 m3, a groundwater and spring water devices dating back to the post-war period, including a wind pump become the symbol and logotype. Today The Closed produces every year 4000 bottles of wine Syrah (“Tafù”), 4000 bottles of wine Catarratto (“Pietragialla”) and a modest amount of oil, given the youth of the olive grove of the variety “Nocellara del Belice”. In 2014 the company has entered the second year of conversion to organic farming and waits for the final assignment of the trademark “Bio”; on the other hand, the crop management has always been inspired by a strict respect of vegetative development natural rhythms. Although not yet able to define our formal wine “organic”, “natural”, “biodynamic” or “conventional”, we believe that at this time, however, the decisive factor is, first and foremost, sincerity and the truth of our intentions.
From one year are initiated, in line with the adaptation of crops to the best techniques, the work of profound restructuring of pre-existing agricultural fund infrastructure in order to offer, in the near future, holiday hospitality with a rehabilitation project of the company converted to a pond bio-Lake “. Not having great facilities we are directed to the hospitality in the form of agri-campsite, and we can also use an already proven synergy with the nearby Spa of Terme Acqua Pia.
In addition, we believe that the proximity to the old town, its historic character and his strong suggestive appearance are a resource and an opportunity for our business but first for the whole territory. For this we bring forward various initiatives within which we promote respect for traditions, protection of the environment and the culture of hospitality.
Since our family residing in the nearby town of Palermo, the company is also in the urban environment by focusing on the promotion of its products – especially our wine – but also on that of the territory. In fact, besides having created a small storage space/exposure, in the Central via De Spuches within walking distance from piazza Politeama, we cultivate the idea of promoting, in synergy with other companies of our territory, the creation of a “convenience store” which collects under the brand name “Terre Sicane” variety of products/services from those places.
Ours is a “Nature project,” returning to earth we seem to not have a choice but to have gone along with the characters of our country, its assumptions, traces of his past and those who have gone before us, counting on the fact that this sensitivity may have regained a liberating function against an increasingly alienated and standardized. To paraphrase the motto of Cardinal Maria Martini “Pro veritate adversa diligere”, we think that perhaps freedom is not choice, but keep the essence of all things that are already here.
The wine “Pietragialla” of La Chiusa company comes from grapes “Catarratto” to 400 m.s.l on calcareous-clayey soil. The age of vines is 12 years, the training system is in “summer pruning” and cordon pruning. The exhibition is to S-SW and the yield per hectare between the 80 and 90 quintals. The vintage is the second week of September and harvesting is manual. Vinification takes place in part through soft pressing and maceration of the skins at a controlled temperature. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats and lasts for 15-20 days. The refining in bottle is one month. The alcohol content is 12.5%. Total sulphur dioxide is 100 mg/l.
The wine has bright straw-yellow colour, with shades of nail level tending to greenish. The nose is broad, delicate, but with good intensity and persistence. Fruity reminiscent of the white peach and apricot. The taste is full-bodied, good freshness and flavor. The fruity tones aftertaste that come back, accompanied by a nice minerality.
