Giovanni and Ida Maggio were youths when they set up Cantina Monte Olimpo. It was 1992 and they were among the first to believe in Sicily, in non-native grapes, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah. Today, their labels speak half Sicilian, half foreign. In fact, several of this winery’s blends marry varieties such as Inzolia to Chardonnay or Nero d’Avola to Cabernet and Syrah. The altimetry – the hilly position of the 22 hectares they own – the temperature variations, and the presence of Lake Arancio that covers the grapes warmed by the daytime sun with hoar frost, all play a positive role. Production has reached a total of 150 thousand bottles, that also include a small production of Charmat method sparkling wine made from Grillo, while the metodo classico is at an experimental stage. A peculiar product of Cantina Monte Olimpo is the “rustic Sicilian”, an old bottle rediscovered and rereleased by the Maggio family.
