On the occasion of the wine harvest I passed a lovely day with the Rallo family. Giacomo and his wife Gabriella, and their son, Antonio, and daughter, Josè: four people who, with their elegance and joy, have been able to give their wine an inimitable character, that is the result of a unique combination of taste, fragrance, and art, ancient traditions and the culture of sustainability in their winemaking. The day started with a coffee in their beautiful house, decorated with flowers from Signora Gabriella’s famous garden and ends with a jazz concert by Josè that accompanies the wine tasting. In the vineyard can really feel the family spirit, warm and solid, and with a very strong bond to this territory. Most of the people taking part in the harvest know each other. One jokes with Antonio when he arrives at the vineyard to give a hand, and many people speak Albanian because the workers belong to an old community of Albanians who fled their homeland in the XVth century and were the founders of Contessa Entellina, where they still reside today. Everytime I look at one of the artistic labels of Donnafugata’s wines, I remember these beautiful days.
